Decision making processes

Decision making is a very useful technique for every aspect of our lives. Knowing how to take a decision is basic and fundamental for everyone.

While we will be  talking about this a lot I thought that it would be useful to present here the basic background and steps someone needs to make a decision.

 The  7 steps in
Decision making Processes
  1.  Identify the decision to be made
  2. Gather more information.
  3. Generate good alternatives.
  4. Explore your options/ weigh evidence
  5. Select the best solution among alternatives.
  6. Evaluate your plan/ take action.
  7. Review your decision.

In MindTools they say that when we have to make a decision we have to deal with the following parameters:

  • Uncertainty
– Many of the facts may be unknown.-
  • Complexity
– There can be many, interrelated factors to consider-
  • High-risk consequences
 – The impact of the decision may be significant -
  • Alternatives
 – There may be various alternatives, each with its own set of uncertainties and consequences-
  • Interpersonal issues
– You need to predict how different people will react-

In mindtools, they  have developed a process for combining problem-solving and decision-making strategies when making complex decisions in challenging situations. This process is similar with the one published by UMASS and you can find it here.

This  also is an article that has been published my UMASS Dartmouth, University of Massachuttes, and it clarifies every step and why this process is segmented in this way.
